What is it for ?
Minims Tropicamide is used to enlarge the pupil of the eye and to paralyse the lens temporarily so that a doctor or eye specialist can examine it closely.
Before using Minims Tropicamide
You should not use this eye drop if you are allergic to tropicamide.
Tropicamide should not be used in eyes which are likely to develop increased internal pressure when the pupil becomes enlarged. The doctor or eye specialist will have checked to make sure that this problem will not affect you.
If you are pregnant you should tell the doctor or eye specialist before Minims Tropicamide is used. It is possible that you will still receive it, but it is also possible that an alternative may be used.
Some people find bright light (such as daylight) uncomfortable for a few hours after receiving Minims Tropicamide. This may make it difficult for you to drive. Do not try to drive until you are sure that your sight has returned to normal and your eyes are comfortable.
This product should be used with care in children. It should also be used cautiously in inflamed (red and painful) eyes.
Using Minims Tropicamide
The usual adult dose is 1 drop followed by a second drop after an interval of 5 minutes. If necessary, a further 1 drop can be instilled after 30 minutes.
The dose for children depends on their size, age and the effect of the first drop. The doctor or eye specialist will decide how much to use.
The doctor or eye specialist will normally put the drops in your eye for you. If you are putting in your own drops then follow these instructions carefully :
- 1. Peel the overwrap apart and take out the Minims unit.
- 2. Twist off the cap.
- 3. Look upwards and gently pull down the lower eyelid.
- 4. Hold the Minims unit just above your eye and gently squeeze until a drop of liquid falls into the gap between your eyeball and lower eyelid.
- 5. Release the lower eyelid and then press gently on the inner corner of your eye for a minute or so. This will help stop the solution draining into your nose and throat. This is especially advisable in children.
Remember to throw away the Minims unit when you have finished.
It is very unlikely that you will suffer an overdose if you follow these instructions carefully, but if you suddenly feel unwell after using Minims Tropicamide, contact a doctor or the nearest casualty department as soon as possible.
After using Minims Tropicamide
Minims Tropicamide does not usually cause unwanted side-effects but sometimes it may cause temporary stinging of the eyes, dry mouth and blurred vision. Its effects on the eye can last longer than expected. If this happens, please contact your doctor or eye specialist.
